April 7th, 1933 - Prohibition ended on that date at midnight leading the nation away from 13 years without legal production or consumption of beer and all other alcoholic beverages.
In 1898 there were 198 active breweries in and around the city making the area one of the premiere American brewing centers of the day.
This honorable and vital industry virtually disappeared with the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified on January 16, 1919, and took effect one year later on the same date.
From Prohibition's repeal it has taken nearly 60 years for the resurgence of brewing to take place and bring the number of US breweries close to pre-Prohibition levels.
